Job Description
Job Title: Full Stack Staff Engineer
Location: NYC or LA (Preferred)
Team: Topps Digital
Reports to: Director of Software Engineering
About the Role
This is a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with other engineering leaders to drive new initiatives and growth ideas across our product portfolio.
Youʼll need to think big, move fast, and thrive in a dynamic environment. Youʼre the kind of engineer who ships MVPs in days, can architect scalable systems, and embraces cutting-edge tools — particularly when they can boost productivity and efficiency.
Youʼll be a critical driver of our engineering culture and help scale both our platform and the team around it.
Why Join Us
We see strong potential for this business to grow rapidly as we launch new apps, drive new initiatives, and expand the digital experience for collectors. This role offers the chance to create impact across multiple applications—including mobile, web, and internal tools. You'll be working with passionate, exceptionally smart teammates who are deeply invested in building a magical experience for digital collectors.
Product Context and Scale
By supporting multiple mobile apps across platforms, youʼll help build scalable and performant systems. You'll have the autonomy to lead and ship initiatives that reach millions of collectors.
First 90 Days
In your first 90 days, you'll lead a new initiative end to end, build strong relationships with engineering leaders, and gain a deep understanding of the business and our full stack infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain full stack features using Python, FastAPI, Next.js, and React.
- Build scalable, performant, and highly available tools on the AWS cloud as well as Vercel.
- Rapidly prototype and iterate on product ideas in close collaboration with Product, Growth, and Engineering leaders.
- Apply strong architecture and system design skills to shape solutions that serve customer-facing UIs, internal tools, and backend APIs.
- Use AI-enhanced development tools (e.g., Cursor, Windsurf, LLMs) to increase engineering efficiency and prototype intelligent features where applicable.
- Build and maintain reusable front-end components, APIs, and internal libraries that support multiple apps (mobile, web). Maintain component documentation and interaction specs via Storybook.
- Write robust front-end and back-end tests (unit, integration, and E2E) using tools like Playwright, ReactTesting Library, Jest, and Pytest, and ensure code quality through reviews and CI/CD pipelines.
- Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and product strategy sessions.
- Mentor engineers and promote best practices in code structure, architecture, testing, and documentation.
- Contribute to a collaborative, transparent engineering culture that values speed, quality, and craftsmanship.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in full stack development with demonstrated proficiency in React, Next.js, TypeScript, TailwindCSS, Python, and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred).
- Deep understanding of architectural patterns, system design, and application performance tuning.
- Experience with AI developer tooling and workflows, or a strong interest in adopting them to improve team velocity.
- Strong testing discipline using tools such as Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, or Pytest.
- Strong understanding of accessibility (a11y), responsive UI development, and front-end performance best practices.
- Experience with state management patterns and tools such as React Context, XState, Zustand, or Redux, with a thoughtful approach to managing complexity and scalability in large apps.
- Comfortable working across domains: mobile web, backend APIs, frontend apps, and internally developed apps.
- Ability to thrive in an environment that requires context switching, autonomous execution, and fast decision-making.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to interface with Product, Growth, and Engineering with clarity and influence.
- Experience with version control (Git) and modern CI/CD practices.
- Demonstrated track record of mentoring others and fostering inclusive, open engineering environments.
- Bachelorʼs degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
Nice to Have
- Experience working in a high-growth startup or entrepreneurial environment.
- Previous contributions driving initiatives, launching projects end to end.
- Background in growth engineering or rapid experimentation frameworks.
- Passion for gaming, collecting, and trading collectibles.
- Previous experience in gaming live ops and/or e-commerce.
If you're self-motivated, love agency, find joy in shipping great work, and want to collaborate with people who are not just smart but also proud users of the platform weʼre building — weʼd love to hear from you.
