1. Program Overview
The Press Helper Apprentice Training Program is a structured, competency‑based development pathway designed to train eligible Material Handler employees for advancement to the position of Press Helper. The program spans approximately six (6) months and establishes the minimum skill requirements, training methods, and evaluation standards necessary for progression. There will be an assessment at 30/60/90 to evaluate if the candidate is on a successful path to completing the program.
2. Candidate Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for entry into the Press Helper Apprentice Training Program, candidates must meet the following minimum criteria:
2.1 Technical and Physical Capabilities
- Ability to qualify on and safely operate manual and electric floor jacks and skid turners.
- Ability to handle and bend printing plates safely and accurately.
- Ability to read and interpret job tickets and retrieve, organize, and prepare stock and materials under the direction of a Press Operator or Helper.
- Ability to maintain cleanliness of the press and surrounding work area in accordance with company standards.
2.2 Professional Attributes
- Demonstrated willingness to learn and acquire new skills.
- Strong desire for advancement and personal development.
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute positively to a team environment.
Candidates will be initially assessed by the Press Supervisor or Press Manager prior to acceptance into the program.
3. Training Expectations and Skill Development
Throughout the six‑month training period, apprentices are expected to acquire the following technical, organizational, and leadership skills. These competencies form the foundation for qualification as a Press Helper.
3.1 Press Operation Skills
- Competent operation of the feeder with minimal errors.
- Accurate replacement of wash towels and safe handling of press chemicals.
- Proficient operation of sentinel ink units; ability to dip ink and change fountain liners.
- Ability to wash up and flush the coater, clean chambers, and switch coating barrels.
- Ability to position plates for upcoming jobs under verbal direction.
- Proper preparation of packing and assistance in blanket hanging.
- Ability to assist with the hanging and webbing of Cold Foil rolls.
3.2 Organizational Skills
- Ability to read job tickets and gather associated materials in advance.
- Ability to anticipate the Press Operator’s needs and work proactively.
- Ability to perform copy, overlay, and position checks.
- Ability to calculate stock usage and waste allowances based on inch counts.
3.3 Leadership and Communication Skills
- Effective communication with assigned crew members.
- Development of foundational leadership habits in preparation for higher‑level roles.
