About the Team
The Full-Stack Engineering team is responsible for building both external and internal web applications that power OpenAI’s products and teams. Our external-facing products directly serve customers, while internal-facing tools support product development, research, design, operations, and engineering across the company. We move quickly to identify user needs, prototype solutions, and scale them into reliable, secure systems—balancing speed with long-term maintainability.

About the Role
OpenAI is hiring a Full-Stack Web Engineer to design, build, and maintain web applications that serve both customers and internal teams. You’ll work closely with designers to identify and meet user needs, partner with engineers across the organization to integrate with platform APIs, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to turn early-stage prototypes into production-ready tools. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic builder who moves fast without compromising security, can navigate a broad range of technologies, and cares deeply about delivering excellent user experiences.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. It is fully onsite, 5 days per week, and we offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and maintain web applications for external customers

  • Develop internal tools used across research, product development, design, operations, and engineering teams

  • Rapidly prototype and iterate on new tools in collaboration with stakeholders

  • Architect and deliver full-stack solutions with a strong emphasis on usability and security

  • Evaluate third-party and open-source solutions, making sound build vs. buy decisions

  • Establish best practices for internal tooling, including code quality, reliability, and security

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with a focus on full-stack web development

  • Are proficient in building user-facing products and internal applications with rapid iteration cycles

  • Have experience taking early-stage products from zero-to-one and iterating quickly based on user feedback

  • Bring a strong understanding of security principles and best practices for protecting sensitive data

  • Are familiar with a broad range of modern front-end and back-end frameworks and tools

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience building internal tools for multidisciplinary teams (e.g., research, operations, design, engineering)

  • Proven track record of effectively selecting and integrating third-party or open-source solutions

  • Strong design sense and experience collaborating closely with designers

  • Familiarity with infrastructure and deployment for internal systems (e.g., containerization, CI/CD)

  • Experience working in environments where speed must be balanced with security and reliability
